Holy Cross Hospital Epilepsy Monitoring Unit Recognized as a Level 3 Center

NAEC Logo

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (May 5, 2014)Holy Cross Hospital’s Epilepsy Monitoring Unit again has been recognized by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC) as a level 3 epilepsy center

Level 3 epilepsy centers have the professional expertise and facilities to provide the highest level medical evaluation and treatment for patients with complex epilepsy.

“Approximately 110,000 South Floridians, or nearly two percent of the population, experience seizures annually,” notes Eduardo Locatelli, M.D., M.P.H., medical director of Holy Cross Hospital’s Neuroscience Institute.  “This is double the national average and therefore it is vital to have the ability to determine the appropriate diagnosis and treatment with our state-of-the-art equipment in our community.”

The NAEC board continues to evaluate the criteria used in its center designation process and the accuracy of the data submitted by member centers. The designation of level 3 specialized epilepsy centers must reflect the expertise of personnel, comprehensive and multi-disciplinary services described in the NAEC Guidelines including basic neurodiagnostic evaluation and diagnosis, as well as basic medical, neuropsychological and psychosocial treatment services.

Holy Cross Hospital’s Epilepsy Monitoring Unit was first designated as a level 3 center in 2012. The unit provides quality care to individuals with seizures or epilepsy and also specializes in providing comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services to individuals with uncontrolled seizures. Located on the fifth floor at Holy Cross Hospital, the unit houses the region´s most sophisticated diagnostic technology for epilepsy.
